Bringing your loved one home

What is required

Your loved one must be professionally embalmed and placed in a sealed, zinc-lined casket. The required medical, airline and consular documents must also be prepared.

Documents needed

• Passport or birth certificate
• Next of kin photo ID
• Cause-of-death certificate
• NSW death certificate or interim certificate
• Details of the receiving funeral home

Travel home

Your loved one will usually travel as priority cargo, often on a direct flight home from Sydney. Family members may also be able to travel on the same flight.

Arriving home

The receiving funeral home will arrange customs and biosecurity clearance and take your loved one into their care before transporting them to the family, village or church.

Cost

Repatriation home from Sydney can generally cost around $8,000–$12,000, depending on the services required.
