When a loved one passes away in New South Wales

When someone close to you passes away, it can be difficult to know what to do first. Take your time, stay calm, and allow your family the space to grieve.

Expected death

If your loved one passes away peacefully at home with palliative care, or in a hospital, hospice or aged-care facility, there is usually no need to rush.

Contact the doctor, GP or care team so the death can be formally certified.

When you are ready, contact your funeral director. We are available to help bring your loved one into our care and guide your family through the next steps.

Unexpected death

If the death happens suddenly or unexpectedly, call 000.

Police may attend and the matter may be referred to the Coroner. This is a normal process for unexpected deaths.

Your family can choose a funeral director at any time. We can work with the Coroner and arrange your loved one’s care once they are released.

Process

1. Choose a funeral director and arrange for your loved one to be cared for.
2. Check for a will, funeral plan or any known wishes.
3. Speak with your family about the funeral arrangements.
4. Meet or speak with your funeral director to plan the service.
5. Your funeral director can assist with registering the death.

Pause & think

You do not need to deal with everything immediately.

Banks, Centrelink, superannuation, property, vehicles and other personal matters can usually be handled later. Take things one step at a time and give yourself and your family time to grieve.
